Project Location
Along South 136th Street between 1st Avenue South and Des Moines Memorial Drive South.
Project Overview
South 136th Street is a critical corridor within the City of Burien. The purpose of this project was to improve the corridor for all users. This project added bike lanes in each direction, removed and replaced existing sidewalks, removed trees, and repaved the roadway along the corridor. To minimize impacts to adjacent properties, on-street parking on the north side of the roadway was eliminated to accommodate bike lanes and sidewalks. On-street parking is generally provided on the south side but was eliminated at some locations to accommodate driveway reconstruction needs.
Improvements included:
- Improved sidewalks
- Improved crossing at 3rd Ave S
- Bike lanes
- Asphalt pavement overlay
- ADA-accessible curb ramps
- Traffic signal improvements
- Drainage infrastructure

Why was this project needed?
South 136th Street had significant issues such as dangerous sidewalks with accessibility issues, lack of bike lanes, and roadway pavement in poor condition. Improperly placed trees nearing the end of their lives were severely damaging sidewalks, and did not allow adequate space for all users to safely pass.

A tree nearing end of its life was damaging and blocking sidewalk.
Project Status
Project was completed in 2024.
