The Police Explorer Program is a volunteer program for young adults aged 14 to 21 who are interested in the field of law enforcement. There is no residency requirement, current members come from throughout King County. Explorers may aspire to become police officers while others may merely be interested in learning about the profession. Explorers work at community events such as the National Night Out and Shop with a Cop, and sometimes assist with parking control at special events.
The application process requires candidates to complete a written application and pass an interview. A thorough background check is conducted in which references and criminal history are evaluated. Explorers are required to have a minimum 2.0 grade average, clean criminal history, and be willing to commit to a minimum of one year of volunteering.
Each Explorer commits to at least four hours of community service a month, fulfilled by attending meetings. Meetings are held every other Monday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Burien Police Department located at 14905 6th Avenue SW. Interested individuals are welcome to observe a meeting but must contact us prior to doing so.
