The Burien City Council voted unanimously to appoint Adolfo Bailon to be the City of Burien’s new city manager, following an extensive interview and selection process. The City Council approved a contract agreement with Bailon during its meeting on June 30, 2022.

The City of Burien is considering zoning code changes to help protect trees on private properties. Code changes are being studied to see how the City can protect and preserve large, healthy trees and making sure the trees are replaced when they must be removed.

After an extensive interview and selection process, the Burien City Council unanimously agreed to make a conditional offer to Adolfo Bailon to be the City of Burien’s new city manager.

Community Connectors will advise City on engagement practices and program development as well as critical plan updates.

This weekend, the City of Burien learned that dozens of Pride flags that had been installed in downtown Burien had been removed and stolen. The poles that held the flags were also broken.

The Burien City Council selected the three city manager candidates to advance to the next round of interviews on June 13, 2022.

During an executive session on June 6, 2022, the Burien City Council discussed the qualifications of 12 candidates for the City of Burien city manager position. They selected six candidates and two alternates during their regular meeting. Five candidates confirmed interest in proceeding. The candidates represent a wide range of experiences and backgrounds. Below is a list of the candidates, where they currently live, and their most recent employment.

Burien community members will be able to attend Burien City Council meetings in person starting May 23, 2022. Meetings will continue to be broadcast via Zoom and on the Burien TV channel (Channel 21 Comcast).

Community members will have an opportunity to meet candidates for Burien City Manager at a meet and greet event on June 9, 2022 at the Burien Community Center.

Burien City Hall will be closed to in-person services on Wednesday, May 18, 2022.

The City of Burien is inviting community members to a conversation about what the City government should focus on for the next 3–5 years. Community feedback will help the Burien City Council develop a new strategic plan.

The City of Burien is developing an action plan to improve water conditions for fish and wildlife in one of our three local streams (Miller Creek, Salmon Creek, or Walker Creek). The plan will identify steps the City can take to reduce the harmful effects of stormwater runoff.

The City of Burien has $10.8 million in federal funds available to invest in the community to help recover from the COVID-19 pandemic. Many members of the community have been negatively affected by the economic and public health impacts of the pandemic, and the Burien City Council would like to hear from our community before deciding how to spend these funds.

The City of Burien is re-opening its buildings to the public starting March 21, 2022.

During a special meeting on January 13, 2022, the Burien City Council adopted Ordinance 789 that extends Burien’s eviction moratorium through the end of the Governor’s state of emergency proclamation (20-05). The amended eviction moratorium only applies to evictions based on non-payment of rent or late fees.

The community is invited to an advisory group meeting on community plans for the Ambaum Blvd corridor and Boulevard Park neighborhood.

Update January 24, 2022: SW 172nd St/Sylvester Rd has been reopened to one-way traffic. Flaggers are on site to direct traffic. The road will be fully open later today.

The Burien City Council voted on January 10, 2022 to elect Sofia Aragon to serve as mayor for a two-year term and Kevin Schilling for a one-year term as deputy mayor.

The Burien City Council appointed Carolyn Hope to be the interim city manager for the City of Burien.

Todd Morrell has been selected as the Burien Police Department’s next captain. He joined the Burien Police Department on December 1, 2021.

The City of Burien is seeking qualifications from individuals or organizations to provide a comprehensive and equitable strategy for engaging Burien residents in city planning projects over the next two years.
