Burien City Council Passes Strengthened Renter Protections
10/31/2022
On October 24, 2022, the Burien City Council adopted Ordinance 804, amending Burien’s existing suite of renter protections originally passed in 2019. The updated renter protections went into effect immediately, before the end of Burien’s eviction moratorium at the end of October.

Applications for Utility Tax Relief Program Due in December
09/23/2022
The City of Burien’s Utility Tax Relief Program offers rebates on certain utility taxes paid toward the following services: water, sewer, solid waste removal provided by Recology Cleanscapes, electricity provided by Puget Sound Energy, telephone (including cellular), and basic cable television. Applications are due by December 16, 2022. Rebates will be issued by the end of February 2023.

During an executive session on June 6, 2022, the Burien City Council discussed the qualifications of 12 candidates for the City of Burien city manager position. They selected six candidates and two alternates during their regular meeting. Five candidates confirmed interest in proceeding. The candidates represent a wide range of experiences and backgrounds. The City of Burien has $10.8 million in federal funds available to invest in the community to help recover from the COVID-19 pandemic. Many members of the community have been negatively affected by the economic and public health impacts of the pandemic, and the Burien City Council would like to hear from our community before deciding how to spend these funds.

Burien Eviction Moratorium Extended through End of State of Emergency
01/14/2022
During a special meeting on January 13, 2022, the Burien City Council adopted Ordinance 789 that extends Burien’s eviction moratorium through the end of the Governor’s state of emergency proclamation (20-05). The amended eviction moratorium only applies to evictions based on non-payment of rent or late fees.
