In addition to encouraging our residents to “shop local Burien”, we are working to attract both regional and out-of-state visitors to shop and dine in Burien. Tourism injects dollars into our local economy as well as providing additional customers for our businesses. We assist with marketing initiatives to promote our businesses so they can enjoy more customers and sales.
Burien welcomes visitors from nearby cities and from out of state. With Burien’s proximity to the Seattle – Tacoma International Airport, an opportunity exists to make Burien a traveler’s first stop upon arrival or their last stop for exploration before heading back to the airport. And with the connectivity of the SR-509 and SR-518, Burien is easily accessible.
Overnight visitors that stay in nearby hotels as well as day visitors can enjoy exploring Burien’s many assets such as:
Here are a few of our recent tourism initiatives:
Say Hello to Burien
In light of the West Seattle bridge closure, the City partnered with the Seattle Southside Chamber of Commerce to develop a targeted marketing campaign aimed at promoting opportunities to access Burien’s many food, shopping, services, and fun activities for West Seattle residents.
Port of Seattle Tourism Marketing Support
A grant recipient of the Port of Seattle’s 2020 Tourism Marketing Support Program, the City of Burien invested grant funds in the development of tourism videos to showcase Burien’s tourism and community assets. These videos were used in two digital ad campaigns to encourage visitors to the region arriving and departing through Sea-Tac International Airport and that utilize the cruise terminals during their stay, to come to Burien to shop, eat, and enjoy before heading to their next destination.
Seattle-Tacoma International Airport Spotlight Program
Burien is an active participant in the Port of Seattle’s Spotlight Program which allows us the opportunity to provide airport travelers with an awareness of destinations, attractions, activities and events occurring in Burien through an advertisement in the Baggage Claim area.
Eat Streets Directory
The City of Burien economic development and communications divisions collaborated to launch Burien Eat Streets, a hyperlocal comprehensive online restaurant directory to make it simpler to support local Burien restaurants. A potential diner can easily identify ideal Burien options based on cuisine, locale, and access more information by website, social media, or by calling directly. All of our food and beverage outlets are now showcased to be easily found by customers.
